Holy Island Village Hall - Restoration Fund

The Village Hall was gifted to the 'islanders' in 1931 by Edward de Stein, a merchant banker, working in the City of London. In the 1920's Edward de Stein bought Holy Island Castle. The Castle, which was restored in 1900, by Sir Edwyn Lutyens, became the de Stein holiday home. Like so many others Edward de Stein fell in love with the charms of Holy Island and as a measure of his appreciation of the Island and Islanders, he built the Hall. In 1944, de Stein gave the Castle to the National Trust, but he remained in residence until his death. His sister Gladys continued to occupy the Castle until her death in 1968.

Our Village Hall is the only building on Holy Island large enough to accommodate the whole community and has been the focal point of island activities since it was built. Functions held in the Hall have been many and varied and include local wedding celebrations, birthday parties, amateur dramatics, special interest group meetings, fund raising events for local charities and Christmas parties. The Hall has also provided a venue for visiting educational groups, small conferences, gatherings of pilgrims and field studies.

Unfortunately, our Hall, so long an integral part of island life, is now well beyond economic repair. At the meeting last winter Islanders voted as one, to rebuild their Village Hall. It was agreed that so far as is reasonably practicable, considering modern day planning and building regulation consents, that the new Hall should mirror the old building.

The elected management committee and volunteers have moved the project forward by fund raising, but we require a huge amount of rebuild money, current estimates suggest £300,000+ ($429,000 or 450,000euros).
