The Lindisfarne Centre

HOME OF THE LINDISFARNE GOSPELS

The Lindisfarne Heritage Centre has been developed by the Island community from those with established family connections to those new families and scholars with more recent connections drawn by Lindisfarne's cultural heritage and natural beauty and history. Linked to one of the country's most professional presenters of historic events, 'The Lindisfarne Heritage Centre' has been designed to provide a valuable and unique sociological and historical link between Lindisfarne past and present. For many it is another reason for coming here yet again.

4 INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS!

photo of the turning pagesTHE LINDISFARNE GOSPELS:  Painstakingly worked and lovingly crafted over 1300 years ago on Holy Island and written 'in honour of God and Cuthbert' the Lindisfarne Gospels return to Holy Island after almost 1000 years of exile.

On loan from the British Library and appearing in electronic interactive turning-pages form, a purpose built annex provides a lifelike and atmospheric setting in which to examine and enjoy the beauty and craftsmanship of one of the nation's most revered and treasured possessions.

Where better to view this wondrous work than in the home that inspired its creation. Baptised in the blood of the monks who created it - The Holy Island of Lindisfarne - 'Cradle of Christianity'.

HOLY ISLAND PAST:  Pictures and artifacts relating to the Island's seafaring heritage. An erstwhile home anchorage of the English fleet as far back as the 11th century. A safe haven when ports as far afield as Edinburgh and Newcastle are closed due to easterly gales. Holy Island had two lifeboat stations up until more recent times. Records of the valour of the Island's coxswains and crews in the saving of life in some of the most dangerous waters surrounding the British Isles.

Tools and implements used in maintaining the Island's boats and farming the land. Photographs of shipwrecks, Island families and war heroes as far back as the earliest days of photography.

For such a small community the Island has a proud and courageous heritage. It is here for all to witness and ponder perhaps upon the associated hardships that were a part of everyday life for an Islander.

Of course it is only possible to 'scratch the surface' of all that is here to be seen but what an excellent job the information panels, artifacts and an interactive exhibit provided by 'English Nature' do in imparting some of that knowledge.

Amongst all this you will also find an interactive display enabling the visitor to converse with some of today's Islanders. Come and hear the unique spoken dialect of the Island.

Located in the centre of the village and staffed by villagers, unlike other centres of history on the Island, all proceeds go towards the maintenance of the Centre and Island community development projects. The 'Lindisfarne Heritage Centre' is open 7 days a week throughout the year - do come.
